don’t-leave-home-without SEO tool
When you work in, on, or around the web, you tend to collect tools. A site here, a toolbar there… you really can’t help it. Here’s a total must have for your SEO toolbox… but don’t tell the developers and designers.
chrispederick.com
The Web Developer extension from Chris Pederick is a hugely popular and useful tool for web developers and designers everywhere. But this browser add-on is an equal opportunity tool that should be in every SEO’s toolbox as well for quick snapshot views and reviews of sites. It will require the use of one of the following browsers, Firefox, Flock, Mozilla, or Seamonkey, but will run on Windows, Mac OS X, as well as Linux, and it’s free.
While you may find many uses for the extension beyond SEO and even more SEO uses than listed here, below are some of the top ways to put it to use. The best way to follow along though is to first install it, view a site that you are familiar with, and then try some of the methods listed below:
Disable Tab
Disable JavaScript.
Select Disable JavaScript and reload the page and browse the site. Does that fancy dropdown navigation still function? Can you click on all the links? If it doesn’t and you can’t, then guess what… the search engine spiders probably can’t get there either.
Images Tab
Is all that great copy on the page really text that the search engine spiders can eat up and use for indexing the pages, or is it really just a bunch of images? Select Disable All Images and you’ll quickly find out.
Displaying alt attribute text.
Use the Display Alt Attributes feature to view the alt attribute text of all images on a page. You should do this to make sure that none of the images have been stuffed with keywords, which won’t help in ranking and doing so may actually hurt rankings.
While text is best for navigation and links, if images are used for this, it’s especially important to make sure the alt attributes contain the textual equivalent to capture any value the search engines may give to images used for links.
Information Tab
Select View Link Information to view all the links on a page. Are there more links on a page than you thought? If this is your site, are there any links leading out to sites that you weren’t aware of?
Use View Meta Tag Information to quickly see all the meta information for a page to make sure that each page has a unique, keyword-rich and relevant description.
Use the View Response Headers and check the 404 Error page of a site by going to a page that doesn’t exist, like yourdomain.com/errortest and make sure that it returns a 404 Error and not a 200 “OK” response.
Miscellaneous
Linearize the page.
Use Linearize Page to see the order of content based on how search engines will read the content. Is the most important content toward the top or buried at the bottom? Does the content read logically, or are “paragraphs” all jumbled because tables have been used poorly to layout the content?
Outline
Select Outline Headings and Outline Current Element to see whether HTML headings have been used (e.g., H1, H2, etc.) to help highlight important page elements. Headings will be outlined and when you mouse over them (or any element), you’ll see the HTML trail in your toolbar, identifying the HTML tags because of the Outline Current Element function, which will allow you to see whether the heading tag is an H1, H2, or other tag.
Options
Persist Features.
Bonus… for a little known but very useful feature, select Persist Features if you want to click-thru to different pages of a site while maintaining some of your selections, like outlined headings and displaying alt attribute text as you move from page to page.
While the Web Developer extension won’t stop the need for a deep dive into a page’s code–there’s also a View Source feature for that too–it will satisfy and simplify many of the routine tasks associated with a quick SEO review.

SEO : Preparing for Additional Website Traffic
Before you do all the work of attracting people to your website, determine whether your business can handle the traffic. You need to prepare ahead of time forincreased volumes, and for all the possible problems and challenges that can occur over time. Ask yourself and/or or potential web-hosting service the following questions:
1. Can your web hosting company handle large volumes of traffic coming to your website?
In most cases the answer to this will be yes, but you need to know this ahead of time so talk to your Internet Hosting Provider so they can be aware of your potential higher traffic activities.
You should also be reminded that additional traffic to your website may mean higher monthly costs from your website hosting company for the increased traffic levels.
2. Are you set up for mail-order shipments? If you are planning on selling products over the Internet, can you and your staff handle volumes of product sales, shipping AND all the things that go along with these. I recommend that you create a mail-order department, and procedures for handling mail-order requests. In most cases this will also mean you should set up a secure, e-commerce website to handle and track the transactions.
3. Do you have a secure website for accepting customer payments? If you don't, you will be losing sales because many online shoppers will only trust secure sites.
E-commerce sites provide a secure means for Internet shoppers to purchase products and services online. There are a multitude of companies that offer services in setting up e-commerce accounts.Check first of all with your own Internet hosting provider to see if they offer this service, or can they recommend another company.
4. What are your procedures for?
a) Stolen Credit Cards(when someone pays with a stolen card number) Ask your merchant account provider for details.
b) Undelivered product(your customer claims the product didn't arrive). Have a shipment tracking system in place.
c) Damaged goods(your customer claims product received damaged) Check for availability of shipping insurance policies.
d) Unsuitable goods(the product simply does not live up to expectations). Ensure your website depicts your products accurately
e) Shipping and delivery.Informing your potential customers of the availability of their purchase andapproximate delivery time.5. What level is your Internet and website security? Will people trust you? Does your website and your business "appear" to be legitimate? Later on in the Branding Chapter you will see why these questions are so important by instilling trust with your clients. Internet security is an important issue, particularly if you are operating an e-commerce site. There are a number of organizations that offer online certificates for secure websites that adhere to their strict code of security implementations. Other things that will help to make your website appear to be legitimate and trustworthy are to publish your street address, and even post a picture of the building in which you are located.
You need to make list of all of the scenarios regarding trust and security. Beside each one, write down what procedure will be taken to correct the situation. As you go through this list, you will discover things you can do that will help eliminate or reduce problems. When you have finished the solutions list, make copies for your staff and post them somewhere so that everyone can see them. Don't be afraid to make amendments to it as the need arises. Decisions in the past can be changed, especially as situations change.
Make sure that you follow through with the items in this section in recognizing problems before they happen. Remember that an increase in sales and activities often means an increase in problems that go along with them. If your business is to sell online and you are not fully prepared for volumes of traffic, this can significantly impact your business. Be like a good Boy Scout or Girl Guide and Be Prepared. The last thing you want is an unhappy customer; as that can do more damage to the short- and long-term viability of your business than any other singular event.

5 Important SEO Tips for Bloggers
1. Optimize Your Titles
A page or post’s Title is the most important piece of on-site optimization because it has the most visible affect upon your search engine rankings. If the only optimization you do is to optimize the Title element, you may see incredible increases in your site’s rankings.
Quick Note: The Title element is in the HEAD section of the HTML output that appears at the top of your browser window. The code for it is located in the header.php file in your WordPress theme.
Individual posts should have unique titles that reflect the post itself, rather than simply duplicating the blog name across all pages. If you want fine-grain control over the titles, the easiest way to handle this is to install the SEO Title Tag plugin. When it makes sense to do so, include the relevant keyword phrase within the title. Don’t spam the title with a long list of keywords. It is very important that the title be compelling - making users want to read more. But if you can get an important keyword phrase within that compelling title, then you’ve achieved title optimization zen.
2. Redirect non-www to www
You should always choose one form for your url - either www.yourblog.com or yourblog.com (without the www). It really doesn’t matter which you choose to use, but only one should available. The other should automatically redirect (via a 301 redirect) to the chosen form. Why? The strength of a page is derived mostly from the links pointing to the page. If some of the links point to the www version, and some point to the non-www version, the strength is being diluted because the search engines see each of those as different pages. Yes, we know that in reality, they are the same page (in 99.9% of cases), but since they MIGHT be different, the search engines can’t assume they are the same. That means that you should take control and redirect one to the other so that all incoming links will focus their strength-giving powers to only one version - the one you’ve chosen.
You could muck around with .htaccess files and funky mod_rewrite code, or you could do it the easy way, by installing a simple plugin to do the work for you. (Guess which way I recommend!) I like the Enforce www preference plugin. You simply upload and activate it, and you’re done. It doesn’t get simpler than that.
3. Link to Your Best Posts
Links are votes. Links pass strength and voting power to the pages they link to. While getting links from external sites to your blog posts is always wonderful, internal links from your own blog to those blog posts are also beneficial. Yes, your own pages can pass link love to other pages within your blog. Therefore, choose a few of your very best posts, link to them within your sidebar, and let your other blog pages pass some link love to those important posts. Linking to these posts will not only draw search engine attention to them, but your visitors will notice them as well. And if your visitors notice them, they may link to them, thereby passing even more lovely link juice to them. This just creates a beautiful, expanding vortex of link love to your best posts. Want an easy way to control this? Of course, a plugin is the way to go. I like the FeatureMe plugin for displaying Featured posts.
4. Socialize Your Best Posts
Social sites such as Digg, del.icio.us, and StumbleUpon play a part in your SEO efforts as well. These types of sites get your posts noticed, and the after-effect of that notice is that some visitors will then link to your posts. And as noted in #3 above, links are votes and pass strength to your pages. You should make it as easy as possible for others to socialize your blog posts, and as always, there are plugins to make that task dead simple for you. My favorite social networking plugins are Social Bookmarking Reloaded and Sociable. Either works well, so choose whichever you like the best.
5. Be Attractive
Now that it’s understood how important attracting links are, you should know that the best way to attract is to be attractive. And the best way to be attractive is to tell others how attractive they are. This means you should liberally link out to other bloggers. This act of linking to others will inevitably lead to some of them eventually linking back to you. In that same vein, you should reward commenters for participating in your blog’s conversation. WordPress, by default, uses the nofollow tag on comment links. Regardless of whether or not the nofollow tag is useful, there are times it should be over-ruled. Your faithful readers and participants in the conversation can be rewarded by removing the nofollow tag on their comment links. You can use a plugin such as LinkLove to allow that to happen. So, give links liberally within your posts, and let your participating readers receive link love as well, and the laws of attraction will inevitably bring links full circle back to you.
We’ll discuss other SEO tips in the future, but these 5 are a great start for a fully-optimized blog.
